ACTIVE SHOOTER SAFETY TIPS
Ok, so what are we talking about here? Well we're talking about some tips that just might help SAVE YOUR LIFE if you're ever catch in a situation where someone is walking around randomly shooting people.
Examples of Past Random Shootings
- Texas A&M: Individual with a high powered rifle shot randomly at personnel on campus.
- Long Island Rail Road: Near Christmas holiday an individual opened fire randomly on commuters with a handgun.
- Columbine High School: Two students opened fire on fellow students with handguns targeting specific individuals as well shooting others at random.
- Virginia Tech:Student opened fire on students in multiple locations with a handgun.
- Empire State Building:An individual brandished a handgun and opened fire randomly on tourist visiting the buildings observation deck.
Personnel Awareness
What drives a person to such acts of violence is unknown
- Be aware of the people around you
- Is a family member, co-worker or friend going through a stressful situation
- Has their demeanor changed significantly
- Are they acting extremely peculiar in actions or comments
- If you know of an individual having extreme problems or whose demeanor has changed significantly please notify someone and try to seek help for that person.
IF CAUGHT OUTSIDE IN THE OPEN
- Seek Cover and Concealment
- Use whatever is available to obscure you from the shooter
- Walls, trees, poles, buildings, fencing, containers, etc.
- Hide behind something capable of stopping a bullet ►Masonry or ►brick wall ► Engine Block of a car
- Run-if safe ► Do not run in a straight line. ► Play dead if you can’t run or hide, then wait for help.
- When Emergency Personnel is present ►Leave hands in plan view, non-threatening ►Do not make any sudden movements ► Expect to be handled roughly until situation is resolved, and first responders are sure you're not one of the suspects.
- Summon help when safe
- Fight as a last option, ► use any object to disable shooter.
- Wait for “ALL CLEAR”signal from recognized authority.
IF SHOOTER IS INSIDE THE BUILDING
- If safe to exit, flee the area; ► if unsure, do not flee.
- Dial 9-1-1, give your location, and follow directions.
- Do not pull the fire alarm.
- If flight is not possible lock doors, get on floor, use furniture for concealment, and remain silent.
- Barricade door with something heavy.
- If possible, hide behind something capable of stopping a bullet ►Hallway and perimeter walls.
- Wait for “ALL CLEAR”signal from recognized authority.
- Follow directions of recognized security personnel.

If you are inside and the shooter is outside ►Take up positions below window line. ► Stay away from through wall A/C units if at all possible.
IF SHOOTER COMES INTO ROOM / OFFICE
- Dial 9-1-1, if safe to do so.
- Seek cover and concealment ►If possible, behind something that is capable of stopping a bullet!
- As a last resort, fight the shooter. ► Rush with lots of people, throw things or use improvised weapons to take the shooter to the ground.
- Wait for ‘ALL CLEAR”signal from recognized authority.
- Follow directions of recognized security personnel.
